The Painting Area provides students with a foundation in the medium’s techniques and history, and an understanding of its current practices. The curriculum addresses some of the most challenging topics in contemporary painting. The Painting Area studios provide ample natural light and space for both work and storage. Its facilities accommodate both traditional and contemporary paint media.
Building upon introductory 2000-level courses, the 3000-level courses address such themes as the human figure and space within the context of postmodernity; painting and its relation to three-dimensional space and architecture; and the ever-shifting boundaries between representation, abstraction and mass media. These courses are designed to cultivate a spirit of inquiry and experimentation as a prerequisite for more focused and independent studies at the 4000 level.
